I think the impressive factor is in learning a language you dont need for survival. You dont get brownie points for learning your tribal local language, your igbo regional language, and the national language of English. That is basics for just existing.
Same for a honduran immigrant who also gets no bonus points for knowing their local mayan language, the national language of spanish and the english spoken at his construction site.
A more impressive feat would be that same Nigerian learning to speak Tamil or the Honduran learning Russian.
Which is similar to the white brittish-german-luxembourgish journalist in the OP. He gets no points for knowing English or german or luxembourgish; but he does get mad respect for picking up spanish, Portuguese, and french.
