just got my PS5 slim....

delivered by Fed Ex. i unboxed it and looked at it. i know it comes with an HDMI 2.1 cable. is the HDMI 2.1 fiber optic cable a better choice? also, i have a ton of bluray dvds that have been sitting for years. should i buy an external HD for the PS5 or a bluray player?

HDMI is fine.

Pros of external disc drive for your console is that you can get used games on disc for cheap and it's one less remote kicking around.

Pros to a separate bluray player is that once you upgrade your game system you'll have to figure out another way to play those bluray discs
