LMFAO. The only 'hip-hop' on the radio back then was him, Grandmaster Flash, the Sugarhill Gang, the Fatback Band and Blondie. There wasn't much to choose from unless you lived and partied in NYC and could stay up past 8 PM.

Spoonie Gee, Schoolly D, The Sequence, The Treacherous 3, etc. got no air-play until a couple years later and that's how I discovered them.

Until then, I thought of him as nothing more than a disco act.
