Most Zombie movies are ass, so a decent one like Dawn of the Dead would be held in high regard. I honestly think that's why the Zombie TV Show TWD became so popular.

At Walking Dead's peak, I was OBSESSED with the zombie genre and realized most Zombie media outside of Walking Dead, Dawn of the dead, 28 days later, etc, is :trash:

Dawn of the Dead is why I gave the TWD TV Show a chance, I was like "They have a Zombie TV SHOW!?!?! :krs: "

either you a fan of the genre or not. its nothing wrong with not liking zombie films but Dawn of the Dead imo was a modern zombie classic

it fast zombies into modern movies (28 days later had fast zombies but they werent really zombies)
it had a great writer/director combo with James Gunn & Zach Synder. Synder is a great visual director but shyt storyteller. The movie was infused with heart and humor that came from Gunn
it humanized and gave a bit of back story to almost all the characters
and had some great action set pieces

:beli:FOHWTBS. That movie is solid. The zombie baby was campy as fukk but it was partially due to effects and it being more funny than jarring.

The dog is absolutely realistic. What isn't cool is people didn't throw her under the fukking bus and keep it moving.

That said, before Dawn, there were no track-star zombies, only shamblers. There are a ton of reasons to like the movie as a brainless flick and not think too much about anything other than what they should have done. Top 3:

1. Tell Andy to stop fukking shooting zombies and prepare to be rescued.
2. Rescue Andy.
3. Make a plan to escape within the first week so they are gone in less than a month.

A big problem with these kinds of films are that in universe, zombie movies don't exist so they find out all the shyt that the audience is usually privy to like headshots only, zombies don't slow down due to decay, etc. It's a solid zombie flick and as @Canada Goose mentioned, got us The Walking Dead that real rap was an incredible show for 5 seasons even if the plots got a lil more "humans are the real enemy" by the time they hit Woodberry.

Lastly, the opening for Dawn of the Dead is all-time great. We got straight to the bullshyt with no breaks in like 10 minutes.

Before dawn of the dead zombies didn’t run full speed. So it was an added challenge we never saw or even fathomed before.

Sounds like I would've appreciated it more in realtime

Nah, that would be night of the living dead imo. Especially for openly acknowledging and attacking racism in a wild way, especially with the ending.
they are both classics.

The film is often cited as being one of the few sequels that are superior to the original. The film was selected as one of The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time by Empire magazine in 2008.[14] It was also named as one of The Best 1000 Movies Ever Made, a list published by The New York Times.[63] In 2016, James Charisma of Playboy ranked the film #10 on a list of 15 Sequels That Are Way Better Than The Originals.[64] The 25th anniversary issue of Fangoria named it the best horror film of 1979 (although it was released a year earlier),[65] and Entertainment Weekly ranked it #27 on a list of "The Top 50 Cult Films."[66] Film.com and Filmsite.org rated it as one of the best films of 1978.[67][68] In 2024, Paste Magazine ranked Dawn of the Dead number 8 on its list of the 100 greatest horror movies.[69] Rotten Tomatoes lists the film on its 100 Best Zombie Movies, Ranked by Tomatometer.[70]
