A note reportedly written by one of South Korea’s most popular boy band stars before his suspected suicide on Monday has revealed his struggle with depression and life in the public eye.

“The depression that was slowly devouring me at last consumed me,” wrote singer Kim Jong-hyun, 27, in a message to his friend Nine, a member of another pop group called Dear Cloud.

Kim, known simply as Jong-hyun, was the lead singer of the world famous five member band SHINee. He died in an apartment in the South Korean capital, Seoul, shortly after sending a “final farewell” to his sister by text message.

After consulting with his family, Nine posted the note to her Instagram account on Tuesday, telling fans that Jong-hyun had instructed her to make it public if he “disappeared from the world.”

It referred to his battle with the crushing pressure of celebrity life, saying “I was broken from the inside” and “the life of fame was never meant for me.”

The superstar, also a successful solo singer-songwriter, went on to question his life choices. “Maybe I wasn’t supposed to be known to the world; I’ve learned that’s what (makes my life) difficult. How come I chose that,” he wrote.

The young performer’s sudden death has prompted an outpouring of grief on social media from fans and fellow celebrities.

But it has also shed a critical spotlight on the multibillion K-pop industry, where artists are drilled to perfection at gruelling song and dance academies from a young age and must meet high standards of behaviour and physical appearance.

“Many talents are recruited as teenagers, and may not be emotionally mature enough to handle the discipline and the scrutiny,” reported US entertainment magazine, Variety, adding that several young Korean talents had committed suicide since K-pop burst onto the scene in the late 1990s.

It is not known what caused Jong-hyun’s depression but like all K-pop stars he faced the instant judgement of social media. In 2013, he was reportedly trolled by conservative activists for publicly supporting LGBT rights.

Shinee’s creator, SM entertainment, released a tribute to Jong-hyun in the hours following his death.

“He loved music more than anyone else and loved performing,” it said. “He is a great artist who loved communicating with his fans through music.”

They take the music and suck the fun and culture out of it and you get these factory made artists.

This the end result

What a tragic situation. Music is supposed to be fun.
That's one of my problems with K-Pop, I can't really take the artists seriously as most of them look the same an act the same. They feel so fugazi. Their fandom don't help either they treat them like Gods and not like humans any mistake these artists do they get scrutinized heavily.

Korea is like number one in the world or close to for suicides.

They have some toxic elements in their culture making this so.
The article even states that it was the norm for these musicians to commit suicide in the late 1990's, which I had no clue as the few Korean artists that I know of that were popular in the 1990s are still alive.

It's the same with J-Pop as well. Fans see them as idols which puts pressure on the artists which causes mental stress.

Yeah in Korea a pop icon would often commit suicide which would lead to a spike in suicide rates for the general public. It's really fukked. It got really crazy for them. They had to stop publicizing suicides.

Yes, my bad I'm also aware of the similar issues that J-Pop stars face. There was a female artist that had sexual relations with someone but she got caught, as she and her group is banned in getting in relationships WTF!:hhh: These labels, management, groups or whatever are keeping tabs on them heavy. At least with the other genres, they get some level of freedom. I tell ya the Japs and the Koreans have the worst pop fandom ever in fact I would put them under the same tree with most female manga fans that enjoy that Yaoi shyt. Unfournetly it's the crazy fandom who will bring in big money so much more artists especially new will continue to feel pressure as their predecessors.

Oh shyt my assumptions where right then, I was having a conversation with somebody about this situation how there is a possibility that the Hyun's fanbase will start offing themselves. Damn In Korea they need to invest in some programs to get these people to do something with their life's instead of living sickly for musicians.
