Hip hop by nature has been derivative since inception. Sampling, mixing, etc.

Most people trend hop and tweak, rather than start something brand new. He is no exception, especially post-late registration.

really post college dropout

ye's style and bread and butter is the sped up soul samples, and after he did that with the blueprint, a handful of songs produced by him for other artists and then his own college dropout album, he started reachin' for other producers' styles and sounds. that's why he got jon brion for late registration to help him expand the sound he wanted but couldn't do on is own

ye was a huge fan of jon's work with fiona apple

Yup. He made it known since day one he likes a lot different music and is inspired by it. Initially he got over on the soulful beats, made a lane, and got to do what the hell he wanted:yeshrug: Not everybody is some visionary creator, totally able to conjure up shyt on their own. He also makes no bones about reaching out when he is limited in some aspect, which is dope cause at least someone else gets to eat, too.

yeah, you know, ye was lucky that by the time the 2nd album came around he already had some money banked up from producin' hits for jay z, alicia keys, and a slew of other artists plus he'd made millions off of college dropout so with that he was able to afford producers (in this case jon brion) to help him out and help expand the ideas and themes he couldn't do on his own. good move on his part and that's what a good producer does too, knows when to pull in the right people to help take things where they need to go
