After all the crying from haters last week, this thread is awfully quiet...
no matta if u hate his c00n ass n shyt
If he really do this he changin the game
big ups to him
Shouldn’t they have 100 percent of their masters though? Nice gesture though
Edit: I misread he is giving back the “50 percent that he owns” so it sounds like he is giving back all that he owned
Def Jam owns the other half of the masters. Publishing is a different thing.
Props if he follows through. He says and does a lot of dumb shyt but this would be a big move
Publishing and Masters are two different things
It was common at one point for artists to own their publishing but 360 deals gave labels a slice of all of the artist’s pie.
It’s NEVER been common for artists to own their Masters. The Master recordings means that whoever owns them owns the rights to the
Music itself. So the label decides who can purchase or license the songs. Publishing means that when that music IS purchased or licensed, the writer/composer gets royalties.
I've been shytting on Kanye so yes I will man up and dap him for this. Assuming it's true, because lord knows this man has lied and fabricated shyt for the last few years.
Shout to Ye for this if he's serious
Thank you for pointing that out. A discrepancy on my part, I had actually misread the original post and inserted publishing in place of masters, so I’m going to edit that original post as to not cause confusion
can't give him props for shyt he shoulda been done. He's doing this AFTER he called out the label. AFTER people called him out for this hypocrisy. AFTER he's already reaped the benefits of owning the masters of records that have already peaked as far as financial viability. He gonna give that money back? Until then I aint gonna give props for that. But it is a good first step...a nice good faith gesture if he really wants to get the ball rolling for musicians. And I'm sure his artists appreciate it. Its better than most get. What next tho Ye?
Lets name rappers/artists who we know own their Masters
Nas (from King’s Disease onward)
Also RIP to Michael Jackson and Prince. Both fought for and owned their Masters in the end
Add Chris Brown to that list. It was big news when he got his last year
Let's see if he actually do it first
Let's see if he actually do it
LL owned his for a long while now.
But current ones:
Chance The Rapper (well duh)
