owning of masters is an industry standard, may be shady but white artists like the beatles have gotten into with their labels for not being able to own them. In business I can't fault the labels or label heads for owning the masters and publishing because of all the work they do for the artist and the fact most don't turn a profit. Also if you have nothing to bargain with, then the label whether it be P, Bird or Universal will own the masters, the trick is to negotiate something when you get success and gold and platinum records.
