Jay Z was signed to Def Jam then Atlantic for one album and he owns all his masters

You should read the links i posted.

Jay-Z negotiated the ownership of his Masters as part of his deal to become President Of Def Jam. Thats a once in a lifetime type of opportunity and leverage that Jay had. And even then the Masters didn’t revert back to him immediately, he got them in 2014.

Drake certainly has to own some of his right? Maybe not the first few albums but didn’t he reup his deal after Views? Same for Taylor Swift after she left Big Machine and went to Republic,
I believe I heard Yo Gotti has some of his

can't give him props for shyt he shoulda been done. He's doing this AFTER he called out the label. AFTER people called him out for this hypocrisy. AFTER he's already reaped the benefits of owning the masters of records that have already peaked as far as financial viability. He gonna give that money back? Until then I aint gonna give props for that. But it is a good first step...a nice good faith gesture if he really wants to get the ball rolling for musicians. And I'm sure his artists appreciate it. Its better than most get. What next tho Ye?
What’s the point of having a record label and investing in an artist if it isn’t financially viable. To be nice? :francis:

Publishing and Masters are two different things

It was common at one point for artists to own their publishing but 360 deals gave labels a slice of all of the artist’s pie.

It’s NEVER been common for artists to own their Masters. The Master recordings means that whoever owns them owns the rights to the
Music itself. So the label decides who can purchase or license the songs. Publishing means that when that music IS purchased or licensed, the writer/composer gets royalties.

What people don't realize is that the Catch-22 of that if that there is no demand for the music, it really becomes worthless...outside of asethetic value.

This is the part I see the disconnect with. Labels are companies, majority of artists are investments not partnerships.

Artists have the ability to operate independently, if they want the major label help, then they're gonna have to pay the fee.

That’s the thing with the music industry, they’re not straight up about the business and costs. They play that we are a family foolishness. It’s designed to get artists to sign skewed contracts.

Kanye is nothing more than a grifter at this point, and people keep falling for the BS. He knows that he can say anti-black and far right nonsense to appeal to the Alt Right crowd, and blacks folks will forgive him as long as he comes back with a statement like this.

He’s been sitting under the learning tree of of con artists like Trump and Candace Owens, so his manipulation skills are on point. He knows that all you have to do these days is say something people like and they’ll support you regardless of if you actually do anything to follow up on what you said. Kanye’s artists have as much of a chance of getting their masters back as Trump has of building a border wall funded by Mexico. Don’t believe anything this man says unless you have tangible evidence in front of you. This man has said and done so much inflammatory and dangerous stuff toward black folks, but people keep giving him pass because he says something that’s not total buffoonery once in a blue moon.
