Kenya didnt want what the Boers did to South Africa by owning 70% of the land , so they purposely put laws in their constitution to prevent noncitizens from owning land. Its a defence mechanism from a Warren Buffet deciding he wants to recolonize. Or a similar situation to when Americoliberians left America after slavery and built fiefdoms in Liberia at the detriment of locals.
There are ways around it tho. They offer what amounts to a lifetime leases on property which have a limit of 99 years. They even restricted which pieces of land can be leased so that foreigners dont just try to lease the whole country. But after the lease term, the property reverts back to local control. So Kelis basically controls her farm until she dies. Its funtionally identical to ownership, but it prevents the land from being permanatly lost to Westerners or passed down.
I suspect part of the reason she is spending so much time in Kenya is so that she can meet the residency requirements to become a full citizen. At that point she will be able to own land like a normal Kenyan. It requires her to be there as a resident for 7 years first. Once agian this is a precaution against colonization, since your average white person from the west isnt willing to commit that long to their colonization scheme.
During my own hotep phase, i had considered buying property in Nairobi for a cheap retirement. The nonlease land is very very cheap relative to American properties. So looked up all the laws,but i personally found the need to stay for 7 years too onerous to make it worth it as a US citizen.
Damn you can learn something on the Coli. That´s the number one reason I´m not in Kenya now. In fact the first problem is getting official residency. I never even really considered it because Kenya is so corrupt You kinda don´t feel the need to and doing it in Kenya requires a multi step process that´s expensive and you´ll be hit up for bribes anyway.
I get why they make it hard because if it were easy then anyone could set up shop and buy a signficant portion of the country cacs own a lot of the Westlands as it is.
