Kenya: Cabinet Approves Indefinite Ban On Adoption of Kenyan Children By Foreigners

Cabinet Secretaries on Monday approved an indefinite ban on Inter - Country adoption of Kenyan children by foreigners. During a meeting on Wednesday, the cabinet also revoked all licences to conduct inter-county adoptions in Kenya with immediate effect.

The decision was informed by a report released last week by the Global Report on Trafficking in Persons 2014, (UNODC) that cited Kenya as a source, transit and destination country in human trafficking.

The country is also ranked at Tier 2 Watch List for non-compliance with minimum standards for elimination of human trafficking, based on the 2014 US State Department report on trafficking in persons. In arriving at this decision, Cabinet noted that, currently Kenyan laws did not define child sale, child procuring, child trade and child laundering as part of child trafficking.

In a statement the Cabinet said the loopholes have put Kenyan children at very high risk as it creates a loophole "for fraudulent, vested interests, masquerading through ownership of children homes, adoption agencies and legal firms representing children, and adopters, to engage in the unscrupulous business of Human Trafficking under the guise of charity."

Ethiopia: Stakeholders, Public Has to End Foreign Adoption

The Ethiopian government is reportedly working hard to facilitate situations to raise the children within their community.
By Zeryhun Kassa
The House of Peoples' Representatives and the Ministry of Women, Children and Youth urged stakeholders and the public to undertake integrated work to totally stop adoption of Ethiopian children by foreign families.

In a press conference, House Speaker Abadula Gemeda and the Minister Zenebu Tadesse told journalists that stakeholders should work closely to end foreign adoption.

Abadula urged the importance to give priority to use local means to raise orphaned children rather than giving them away to foreign families.

He suggested the importance to establish and support local NGOs which raise orphaned children with the close collaboration of the public.

He urged stakeholders and the public to support these initiatives and protect children from any kind of abuse.

The Minister Zenebu on her part said the government is working hard to end foreign adoption and facilitate situations to raise the children within their community.

Over 9,000 children were adopted by foreign families during the previous years, in a yearly basis, she said.

Through various activities carried out over the past years, number of children adopted by foreign families reduced to less than 1,000 in 2005EC.

She attributed the success to implementation of various laws and increasing knowledge of the public.

I understand why they're doing it but it will just hurt the kids in the long run anyway because it will deprive them of the chance of getting new homes in better countries where they can thrive.

The goal should be to improve the country so these kids can thrive at home. Smaller countries biggest problems is the "brain-drain" effect. Look it up. Sure at that age they arent part of the equation yet but still.

I am for foreign adoptions sometimes but there has to be a cap and strict measures. The government of the country where the child came from should communicate with the government of the destination country to ensure the welfare of said child
