Marathon sex session' at Olympics leads to end of synchronized diving tandem

According to reports in Brazilian media, 20-year-old Ingrid Oliveira and 17-year-old Giovanna Pedroso have ended their diving partnership after Oliveira booted the teen out of the room they were sharing at the Olympic Village in Rio so she could enjoy a “marathon sex session” with Brazilian canoeist Pedro Gonçalves.
After an apparently sleepless night for both divers – albeit for very different reasons – the two finished in last place in the women’s 10-meter synchronized platform dive, a performance described as "pathetic" by local outlets.
While the two appeared friendly in a picture posted on Instagram two weeks ago alongside fellow Brazilian athletes, the sparks began to fly when Oliveira brought Gonçalves back to the apartment the two shared in the Olympic Village.
Oliveira apparently asked her teammate if she would mind sleeping elsewhere so that she and the canoeist could share some up-close-and-personal time. After what was described as a “heated discussion,” Pedroso finally relented.
Oliveira and Pedroso already had what has been described as a “fraught” relationship, and the sex session appeared to be the “final straw” between the two.
Following their dismal finish, Pedroso diplomatically announced, “After the Olympics, I will focus on my individual [diving]. It's good, because I will not need to depend on anyone."
"We had a fight and were not talking,” Olveira said, according to the Telegraph
. “We leave differences behind and we talked normally. From today I will not jump synchronized with her."
On Instagram, Oliveira claimed she was banned from talking about the incident and thanked her followers for their support during a "difficult moment.”
Gonçalves has declined to comment on the matter.
While the steamy night between the Brazilian athletes made headlines, they are not the only Olympians getting physical outside the sporting venues.
These Summer Games may be a perfect environment for hook-ups. About 10,000 athletes are living in a 31-building compound far from Rio's center and the iconic beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. The Village is secluded among the misty, lush mountains of Rio's western section with a few shopping centers and high-rise towers nearby.
"The Olympics [Games] are a very sexually charged time," said Julie Spira, an online and mobile dating expert. "Young athletes and attendees have been using dating apps heavily in prior Olympics, but now the popularity of an app like Tinder continues to grow and grow."
Blame it on Rio. Some 450,000 condoms were allocated for athletes by Olympic athletes, more than three times as many as for the 2012 London Games.
