Yea I remember during the MJ memorial Kobe and Magic both happily agreed to say some words. Mike was just one of those dudes that everybody looked up to, even the ones who get looked up already
Of course. Excellence recognizes excellence, and those who strive for excellence know who already achieved it. And unique people recognize other unique people, which is why MJ would recognize an 18 or 19 year old Kobe had a chance to be one of those ones.

It was genius of Mike to call him. Mike realized that it's lonely when you're a great. Rare air. I wish I had someone speak life into me like that at a young age. My parents were around, but they didn't really spark that flame of wanting to be great, just go to school. I got it from watching greats like Mike and Kobe.

Per King:

One player asked Bryant: "What's your favorite book?" He said, "Jonathan Livingston Seagull." Hmmm. The book is about a seagull who wants more out of life than swooping down and fighting his fellows for food. Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a non-conformist who wants to perfect his flying technique, and wants to branch out into other passions.

It is not what the Chargers expected. But it was great.

Bryant's point: The way to be great is not to be in the pack, but to strive to be better every day of your life. It's cool you're in the NFL. But now what are you going to do? How great can you become?

Chargers VP of Communications Josh Rupprecht told King, "I think half the team went out and bought 'Jonathan Livingston Seagull' that day."

So how was he 42 in 2020? Being born in 78 would make him 20 in 98.

Kobe's birthday was August 23rd. If Mike talked to him during the summer after the seaaon ended then he would still have been 19 in 1998. He was only 20 years old in 1998 for 4 months.

He died at 41 cause it was January 26th when he died. And he would not have turned 42 until August 23rd.
