Kojima sounds disappointed about the state of his industry. Studios are closing left and right producing blockbusters that are too bloated and too expensive. Watching Summer Games Fest, a popular trailer marathon for gamers, Kojima felt like everything previewed involved fighting an alien monster or a medieval monster. “Even the visuals and the systems are pretty much the same,” he laments, “and a lot of people enjoy this, I understand, but it is important to put something really new in there for the industry.”

Perhaps it’s why he plays so few games now. He believes that, like many creative fields, the most interesting work is happening among indies, while the big budget studios are churning out things that are safe and tremendously boring. This summer, Konami, mining its existing IP, will release a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, created with no involvement from Kojima. (When I asked if he will play it, Kojima laughed and said, “No, I won’t.”)[/quote

That's just how it goes. Studios make alot of money and stick to their guns. It wasnt always like this.. I think the rise of metacritic may play a factor. Most of the current big budget gaming industry can be traced back to Resident Evil 4. All you need is one studio to jump and others will follow.

yep one game succeeds in a particular lane then everybody doing it, there was a point where every gotdamn game was open world when it did not need it smh
Persona 5, Witcher 3, BOTW, and Elden Ring are recent examples. So many games within their genre either copied them or copied elements. On one hand, it's cool to see which games have an influence. But my god, seeing so many clones got annoying.

witcher 3 was the template for companies like ubisoft to make every gotdamn game open world with soo many side quest u wanna puke....ubisoft quality has fallen off for this reason all same type of games..without much breathing room in between games.

Yes, but am more on the side quest bloating and the assassins creed took a left that resembled Witcher 3..started with origins and down hill with their other games..funny enough far cry 3 was probably the last good far cry game that I've played..the rest same formula
