I don't wanna dox myself but when time permits :mjpls: I'm out there hittin shows :mjpls:

Been to a couple Jazz shows the past few years in LA.

I've gotten to speak to a few contemporary Jazz heroes, got my shyt signed by Ali Shaheed.

shyt is mad cool.

What's the scene like out there? Is it common to see ppl jammin out in black american venues?

The is there a lot of collabs with the local rappers outside of kendrick's TPBF, cuz I heard LA was king of "nujazz-rap" wave as well.

shyt crazy how y'all got the nephew of John Coltrane out there actively making music right now. lol

Texas is probably right after them

SUPER ironic, cuz I was JUST looking up some of them exact same Chris Dave and Glasper ids a couple days prior.

Our HBCU TxSU host a jazz station.

And two of the hottest black owned restaurants in the city host a lot of live jazz musicians.

I think along with the church of course, the HS and TxSU Ocean Of Soul bands churn a lot of these cats out, cuz that shyt is pretty serious down here.

It's pretty dope man !

Sets are interesting because it might not be JUST a jazz performance yah know ?

So we'll have a R&B/Soul (with a band) that transitions to a DJ doing mixes and playing
his original beats to a final live Jazz performance (for example)

In the shows I went to there wasn't really any Emceeing but lots of singing, jamming etc.

The venues I hit weren't necessarily "Black American" though, they had a colorful crowd
filled with what feels like hipsters who aren't necessarily "jazz heads" but I didn't judge anyone :pachaha:

I've missed shows because my work schedule, like last year Terrace Martin had a completely free show
and I missed it. His shows definitely feature more Rapping (the one last year if memory serves me correctly
had problem for example) but hey, I haven't fully explored all that L.A. offers as far as Jazz is concerned.

Once covid dies down, I plan on hitting more shows as often as possible.

You also had jazz elements in west coast acts going back to the 90s like Pharcyde, souls of mischeif, Freestyle Fellowship and The Coup in the 90s

Jazz west coast rap music obviously did not get as popular as the G funk, synthisizer sound that was present from the west. Thus when people think of west coast rap like back in the 90s they dont think of that sound or at the least it isnt synonymous with it as it is on the east coast(New york)

sidenote: when you actually look at it, LA and the grand west coast rap scene in its entireity was more diverse than people realize back then

west coast had styles, sounds and people from 40, Planet Asia, Snoop, Madlib, Dre, 2pac, C-Bo, Brotha Lynch Hung(horrorcore) etc

to someone who knows surface level all they will think is the west coast was jus gangsta rap and thats FAR from the case.

infact i remember someone telling me TPAB was not like other west coast albums, but thats very likely wrong, because there have been other west coast albums that are jazz influenced to

TPAB just follows a canoncity of west coast albums that just isnt as popular as its more G funk, syn, clean crisp counterparts

Yeah, I said this before that historically the hiphop from the West Coast was the most diverse of any/all regions, even in the 1990s

To add to this , it wasn't even for for him on this album because he had jasongs with westcoast jazz leanings way back on the Kendrick Lamar Ep and Overely Dedicated era. He wasn't even the only one from California with this style. either because Dom Kennedy did too.
