Just south of downtown.

The North border is The 10 Freeway
The West border is The 110 Freeway (if you hit USC, you went too far)
The East border is technically Central, but most folks don't trip if you extend it to Alameda*
The South border is really Vernon, but Vernon touches South Park and a lot of folk include South Park which extends to Slauson. Anything south of Slauson is where Watts starts.

*those who do trip off the East boundary do so because East of Alameda is where it really starts to get Mexicaney (for lack of a better word). For example, when Ice Cube dissed Cypress Hill on "King Of The Hill" he said:

"I hear you claiming South Central, wait/
you ain't from my 'hood, y'all hoes from South Gate!"

The City of South Gate is quite close to the South Central area but is not a part of Los Angeles Proper, and borders on Alameda.

South central is actually bigger than that in my opinion....to the west I think it goes to la brea in certain parts... to the east I thin u went to far, anything beyond broadway I consider the east side...to the north you’re definitely off USC is a part of south central...the northern border is wilshire...and nikka wtf are u talkin about when u say anything after slauson is watts:gucci: you’re waaaayyyy off I think the most southern tip is el segundo :yeshrug:

Is it as the word suggests?

Almost exactly in between east and west LA, but closer to the south part of LA?

South Central is not a reference to a geographical location

it's a reference to Central Avenue, that's where blacks first populated Los Angeles in a area known as the low bottoms

which is now referred to as the east side because it is east of the city's dividing line of east and west streets - Main Street

in the old days Central Ave used to be the dividing line of black Los Angeles as far as west & east

to answer your question the term South Central comes from S. Central Ave....later as blacks moved west of 110 freeway/main st, the word South Central was applied to the whole South Los Angeles where blacks lived
