- "Mort" is ALSO a masculine adjectival noun meaning a dead male (le mort = the dead ; "the dead" could also be meaning "les morts" (plural) in french)
- "Mort" is ALSO a masculine adjective meaning dead (il est mort = he's dead)

mort in the OP's case is a feminine noun so even if referring to a man you'd have to say "la petite mort" because even if the man is "dead" the "death" itself is still feminine.
