LSU's La'el Collins, projected to be a first-round pick in Thursday's NFL Draft, is wanted by Baton Rouge police for questioning following the shooting death of a pregnant woman last week, Baton Rouge Police Cpl. Don Coppola Jr. said Tuesday.
Brittany Mills, 29, who was shot and killed April 24, is believed by police to have been romantically connected to Collins.
Coppola said the department is currently not pursuing Collins as a suspect.
"We're looking to get in touch with Mr. Collins to question him about the (shooting)," he said. "Again we're not pursuing him as a suspect, but we know he had some type of relationship with Mills. As part of the investigation, we would like to sit down with him, and ask him who may be responsible for this."
ESPN reported that Jim Boren, Collins' attorney, told police that his client is in Chicago getting ready for the NFL draft.
"We took the investigation seriously," Boren told ESPN. "We've tried to rule him out as a suspect. We're going to provide that information to the police, and ultimately [Collins] will sit down and talk to them. But the timing is poor."
According to police reports, Mills was shot after she opened the door of her apartment around 11 p.m. last Friday. When police arrived, they found Mills suffering from several gunshot wounds to her torso.
Mills was transported by EMS to a local hospital where her unborn child was delivered. The newborn child is in stable condition and, at this time, is expected to survive.
"We're not sure of the exact nature of the relationship but it's believed that the two were romantically linked at one point and time," Coppola said of Collins and Mills.
The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Baton Rouge native is expected to be among the first 20 players picked –- possibly as high as No. 13 by the Saints – and unlikely to make it to No. 20. Some scouts and many analysts think he's the best offensive lineman in the draft.
