I was a latchkey kid from about 6th grade and up. Was thinking, were you at a disadvantage from a parent/relative not being home when you got off school? Are there any studies that show a correlation between a latchkey kid, and one that has a stay at home parent.

When I did it it wasnt called latchkey

But me and my homie used to drive them crazy because we would be rapping Money Ain't A Thang and I always did JD's rap while banging on the table. :russ:

Interesting topic op...I actually used to have anxiety/abandonment issues due to being a latchkey kid from a relatively young age and having to spend the majority of my time at home by myself which was bittersweet for me. I liked the freedom more when I got to high school but before that it was more like I felt abandoned/neglected at times.

That is really interesting with the anxiety/abandonment issues. I can relate. Especially if a lot of your friends are not coming home to an empty house as well. 9/10, you're on your own until an adult gets home.

Yes and I think that's what made it worse when I was younger because the rest of my friends had at least one parent at home when they got home but I didn't. It did make me more independent as others have said but it also made me feel a little sadder/emotionally detached inside too in some ways.

You can't help but stay inside your head a lot if you're by yourself for a good 4 hours until someone gets home. I'm not blaming anything on parents having to work, but kids do need a lot of socialization at a young age and upwards.

They had nothing as far as afterschool programs by me. One Police Boys and Girls club that was never open. The public school systems (Maryland) had nothing to offer as well.
