This is why these congressional black caucus people who bet on the "browning of America" helping Black people have already failed. There are a sizeable amount of Latinos that see themselves as white and just hate Black people as much as WASPs in America do. Anti-blackness in their countries trumps anti-blackness in America. They vote hardline republican for MAGA candidates who are about gun laws and tough on immigration policies much like the right leaning leaders in their own countries. They take over business, and they will ONLY hire their own...Black people need NOT APPLY.

Look, I’m gonna be real with y’all. This woman isn’t necessarily wrong, but she isn’t completely right either.

This is purely anecdotal, but it holds true in my experience. A lot of these people don’t consider themselves white, they consider themselves American. This identifier instantly puts them on the opposite end of the spectrum in that they are completely assimilated and fully hold colonialist views, even if they are not aware of it.

My pops is the proudest fukking Mexican dude out there. He works construction, he bears tattoos of Aztec iconography and he used to mock me relentlessly for having “white” interests like rock music, philosophy and computers. He’s so dark that I used to say he looked like max from mortal kombat. But he’s also a republican, which begs the question why? How could someone so at odds with WASP society hold such contradictory views?

The answer lies in the fact that he venerates white society, unknowingly. He’s a born again Christian of the Protestant kind. He’s American born and has no connection to our ancestral roots outside of a superficial understanding of it. This rings true for the vast majority of brown skinned folks that hold such disgusting views, because after all, how can one hate their own kind and justify the abuses they receive by virtue of circumstance of birth?

Another problem lies in the muddied understanding of our history. In Texas we are taught absolutely nothing about the influence of Mexican culture here, outside of specialized classes. We are taught the valiant efforts of the slave owners at the alamo, the excesses of Mexican authority upon the settlers, and the heroic triumph of Stephen f Austin, but nary a peep about the origins of the Texas rangers and the wanton slaughter of freed slaves, natives and Mexican American citizens.

We are taught that we were ostensibly guaranteed our rights per the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, but never that this was merely a formality and never a guarantee. We don’t examine the power dynamics that enabled the Anglo minority to exert an inordinate amount of authority. We are not taught that Mexicans, freed blacks and native Americans were routinely threatened and forced to give up land or face extrajudicial execution.

We aren’t taught civil rights benchmarks like Hernandez vs Texas. We aren’t taught about Felix Longoria. We aren’t taught about the pouvenir massacre. We aren’t taught about much of anything at all, and that is by design.

This is why republicans are so scared of the truth. They wield ignorance like a hammer, inculcating this whitewashed version of history into us from birth, encouraging a selfish and myopic view, extricating the very essence that makes us who we are. It takes a lot of reflection to reject these teachings, which is something many of us can not do.

It is no surprise that I am a socialist. I simply hold the view that I can’t be free until we’re all free. :manny:

The concept of visible vs. non-visible minorities is one that should be utilized more.
