Nah it screams insecurity. I've been going to shows since the 90s and I remember cats working hard throughout the card and the shows featuring ref bumps, promos ,and weapon (chairs and belts mostly) use during house shows.

No one put their hands to their ear cause that was a 100% Hogan thing. What you described Cena doing is something that doesn't even happen much.
