How does one go about doing it?

This is about my self hating cousin

Growing up, he went to a mostly white school and the few black kids there were straight hoodrats and he was embarrassed to be anyway associated with them. Even after HS, he still has self hate issues. With nearly every black person being portrayed poorly nowadays combined with our unfortunate history, how does one go about becoming proud to be black?
