the media can turn a pile of dogshyt into a star by giving it enough attention
exactly. people are letting their personal opinion get in the way of reality. it's 2013. almost anyone can get famous for doing anything.

style of play doesn't control popularity that much. tim tebow isn't a nfl qb but isn't he one of the most popular players in america?
Style of play is huge. Why do you think the NBA finals ratings were the highest when Jordan played? To see what sneakers he was wearing?

Jordan's style of play drew you in because you never knew what he was going to do on the court. He would do something you never saw before and will never see another player do again. Lebron's game is predictable and boring. Gorilla stumble his way to the hoop, hope for a foul. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Jordan had a combination of things going for him that drew people to tune in and watch him. All those things factored in to his popularity, but it started with his play. His play captured your imagination and attention. Everyone wanted to watch him and be with him. Dude was a pop icon in the 90's. Commercials and a movie with bugs bunny. Music videos with michael jackson. The cacs on seinfeld lost their shyt when they got some tickets to see jordan play. You think any show would have it's characters going crazy over goddamn lebron today?

People tune in, for the most part, to see lebron lose and tune out after a quarter or two of the refs carrying and babying him. Tebow has the christian boy image going for him that endears him to fans. That's why the media's all over his nuts. He's a goody too shoe in game full of nefarious characters. Jordan's game is what drew fans to him.

Nobody is doubting that Jordan put the NBA on the map globally and changed it forever. However, I'm saying that this generation is at it's peak when it comes to entertainment and media. Meaning the popularity of something small twenty years ago could be big today.

You quoted 2 posters who said lebron's game is ugly and then you said "style of play doesn't control popularity that much". In regards to this thread, we're talking about the popularity of jordan and lebron. Lebron's play will never draw in the amount of fans that jordan did.

You think twitter, facebook, etc is going to push lebron's popularity pass jordan's? Jordan's still on video games, still got commercials, still selling sneakers, goddamn miley cyrus - probably the most buzzing female artist right now - got jordan all over her damn video with the song called "23". You know how many people watched that shyt on youtube? Iverson specifically thanked Jordan in his retirement yesterday. All the social media outlets available for lebron are still available for jordan.

Lebron has no edge over jordan in terms of popularity. And popularity means being liked or admired. Way more people hate lebron than hate jordan.
