style of play doesn't control popularity that much. tim tebow isn't a nfl qb but isn't he one of the most popular players in america?
Style of play is huge. Why do you think the NBA finals ratings were the highest when Jordan played? To see what sneakers he was wearing?
Jordan's style of play drew you in because you never knew what he was going to do on the court. He would do something you never saw before and will never see another player do again. Lebron's game is predictable and boring. Gorilla stumble his way to the hoop, hope for a foul. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
Jordan had a combination of things going for him that drew people to tune in and watch him. All those things factored in to his popularity, but it started with his play. His play captured your imagination and attention. Everyone wanted to watch him and be with him. Dude was a pop icon in the 90's. Commercials and a movie with bugs bunny. Music videos with michael jackson. The cacs on seinfeld lost their shyt when they got some tickets to see jordan play. You think any show would have it's characters going crazy over goddamn lebron today?
People tune in, for the most part, to see lebron lose and tune out after a quarter or two of the refs carrying and babying him. Tebow has the christian boy image going for him that endears him to fans. That's why the media's all over his nuts. He's a goody too shoe in game full of nefarious characters. Jordan's game is what drew fans to him.
