Cleveland Cavaliers forward Lebron James is has been making a lot of news this year from his infamous NBA Finals cramp injury to returning to Cleveland Cavaliers, the original team that drafted him and also his hometown team. But now he finds himself amongst one of the biggest controversies going on the country. During a shootaroud before the Cavs’ game against the Knicks, reporters asked the All-star his opinions on the Ferguson situation as well as the Eric Gardner verdict.
In Ferguson, Officer Darren Wilson shot and killed unarmed Michael Brown but was not indicted for his actions. Eric Gardner died at the hands of a New York City police officer, who performed a chokehold on Gardner, which was considered an illegal maneuver. James said that there is much work to be done to correct these issues.
“It doesn’t matter, it’s more troubling that it’s happening in our country,” said James. “This is our country, the land of the free, and we keep having these incidents happen, innocent victims or whatever the case may be. Our families are losing loved ones. I’m not pointing the blame at anybody that’s making it happen. In society, we’ve come a long way, but it just goes to show how much further we still have to go.”
The superstar Cavalier has been known to be one of the main athletes that speak on social issues. He even chose to address those athletes who do not speak on certain situations.
“It doesn’t matter if you are an athlete or not. If it hits home for you, then you have the right to speak on it. That’s why we have freedom of speech,” added James. “I’ve never shied away for something that I feel for or people or families that I feel for. That’s just who I am. But I don’t think we should add pressure to anybody, first of all, that doesn’t have the knowledge about it, that’s not educated upon it to speak about something you don’t know about. If you feel passionate about it, you speak about it. If not, don’t worry about it.”
There have been other athletes to comment on the Ferguson incident since and might be plenty more to comment on the Eric Gardner situation. James’ comments appear both safe and aggressive at the same time. They do not indicate that there is any racial tension as many of the conversations that have surrounded them. Both of the victims were black and have raised many red flags among the African American community regarding police brutality . The situations have also raised concern about the lack of black celebrities who have not spoken up about what is going in those situations.
