The Secret Bias Hidden in Mortgage-Approval Algorithms – The Markup

An investigation by The Markup has found that lenders in 2019 were more likely to deny home loans to people of color than to White people with similar financial characteristics—even when we controlled for newly available financial factors that the mortgage industry for years has said would explain racial disparities in lending.

Holding 17 different factors steady in a complex statistical analysis of more than two million conventional mortgage applications for home purchases, we found that lenders were 40 percent more likely to turn down Latino applicants for loans, 50 percent more likely to deny Asian/Pacific Islander applicants, and 70 percent more likely to deny Native American applicants than similar White applicants. Lenders were 80 percent more likely to reject Black applicants than similar White applicants. These are national rates.

In every case, the prospective borrowers of color looked almost exactly the same on paper as the White applicants, except for their race.

We found that lenders gave fewer loans to Black applicants than White applicants even when their incomes were high—$100,000 a year or more—and had the same debt ratios. In fact, high-earning Black applicants with less debt were rejected more often than high-earning White applicants who have more debt.

Oh geesh, what a surprise.

When you're black, doubly when you are a black man, you encounter resistance after resistance.

It is a arduous climb to the top as you deal with landlords, banks, employers, insurers, and potential clients.

Why I feel a strong urge to choke someone when they come with bullshyt like "Why don't you just start your own firm. Stop looking for a piece of the pie".

Not a surprise.

The fact Asians AND Latinos get discriminated on the algorithms at high rates like us.....is proof that whitey is just pretending to accept them.

He doesn't care who is #2 or #3 as long as he's comfortably #1.

Wypipo get cash transfers from family and favorable mortgage lending but have you thinking they are some savvy financial geniuses.

It's always been known.

But how do they know if you're black outside your name?

Like is there a box where you tick AA.

Houston to LA like I'm Robert Horry.
Because regardless of the inputs of your algorithm there is somewhere a STAIN of racism in historic data that will go back to classifying people by race.

Current zip code? Race
Education? Race
Job Title? Race
YOE? Race
Debt to Income Ratio? Race

Everything historically can be traced back to race by a machine learning algorithm eventually and if they can do that then the algorithm can and will find patterns that dictate Blacks have been getting the short end of the stick for centuries.

This is an area where I believe AI need not apply because historic data is too biased to ever be a good proxy for decision making when it comes to lending.

Yes.

Then there is talking on the phone, meeting face to face, and them looking you up on social media.

I'm pretty sure that every brother on this site has experienced the mood shift going into the first conversation.

Completely shocked Asians are getting denied that hard.

Everyone should be banking with a credit union btw. They need your business.

this is why when you apply for a mortgage, do multiple lenders all at the same time, counts as 1 credit pull if done within 30 days of each other I think, or even use a mortgage broker who can get multiple quotes for you and they really need your commission. If you have spotty credit or more of a "cash" income, work with local banks or credit unions that knows the community.
