Sinners Sinks Its Fangs Deeper Into the Necks & Pockets of Moviegoers: Weekend Box Office Results (Apr. 25-27)

It's official - Sinners is a monster. Most horror movies fall off by more than 60% in their second weekend. Not Sinners. With $45.7M, it only fell by a miniscule 4.8%. Get Out, another R-rated horror film, only dropped by 15.4% in its second weekend. After 2 weekends, Sinners has made $123.2M. At this rate, $200M is a lock and I won't be surprised if it pushes toward $250M.

Yes we do. :wow:

Second place belongs to the 20th anniversary re-release of Star Wars Episode lll - Revenge of the Sith, with $25.4M. That crushes the $8.7M Episode l's 25-year anniversary made last year in its opening weekend. It's more than the $21.9M opening Episode V made in its 1997 re-release. Crazy numbers. It also brings Episode lll's lifetime domestic gross to $405.7M.

I remember staying up all night to write a paper in college with Episode lll playing on TNT. :banderas:

Coming in third was a sequel nearly 9 years in the making - The Accountant 2 with $24.5M. That is actually $200K less than what The Accountant made in its opening weekend in 2016. I didn't care for the first one. Could not stand Anna Kendrick's character so I'll skip this.

Nope. See ya on Amazon Prime. :skip:

A Minecraft Movie continues to mine millions with another $22.7M. That puts the running total at $379.9M after 4 weekends. It passed Jurassic World Dominion's $376.8M. The significance there? Jurassic World Dominion made $1B at the global box office. A Minecraft Movie has made $815.9M worldwide so far.

We have another videogame adaptation closing out the top five, as Until Dawn opened with $8M. That's just shy of Heart Eyes' $8.3M.

Thunderbolts Light Up the Box Office; The MCU is Back*: Weekend Box Office Results (May 2-4)

It's the first weekend of May, which means it's officially Summer at the Box Office. And things are definitely heating up with the MCU's latest release - Thunderbolts* debuting with $76M. Despite the A- CinemaScore and 88% fresh score on rotten tomatoes, that opening only amounts to 42% of its $180M production budget. It's also $12.8M less than Captain America: Brave New World's $88.8M 3-day.

While Thunderbolts*'s $76M is the third best opening of the year, only the MCU is who it is judged against. That's the standard the franchise has set. As such, it is unofficially the 9th lowest opening in MCU history. Right now, it's ahead of Ant-Man and The Wasp's $75.8M and Shang-Chi's $75.3M. By tomorrow, when the official numbers drop, that opening could below those two. The good news is that that A- CinemaScore should indicate good word of mouth and good holds going forward. So next weekend should not see a 60%+ drop like we've seen with the recent MCU films post and Endgame.

If Thunderbolts* does falter next weekend, don't be surprised if Sinners is back to take that top spot. It's entirely possible with a tremendous $33M third weekend. That gives Sinners three of the top ten highest grossing weekends on the year, tied with A Minecraft Movie. With those 3 weekends, it's totaled $179.7M. It's the third highest grossing movie of the year, soon to pass Captain America: Brave New World's $200.3M. It's also passed Creed lll's $156.2M, making it Ryan Coogler's third-highest grossing film. This man has reached the next level, as he surpasses the Rocky and MCU franchises. :wow:

Feige hollering at Ryan and Mike like "hey, you guys wanna make the *new* Blade movie"?

A Minecraft Movie continues to stack millions, with another $13.7M. It just missed out on hitting the 4 century mark - and will have to settle for a $398.2M running total. It did pass Spider-Man: Far From Home's $391.2M to become the 52nd highest grossing movie ever.

The Accountant 2 lost a cool 61.4% of its audience with a $9.4M second weekend. It only made $2.4M more than The Amateur's $7M second weekend. But its $41.4M running total is already more than The Amateur's $36.9M. :ehh: It's also more than the $40.2M that Wicked made in 2025. But it is behind The Accountant's $47.5M after two weekends. :umad:

For the second time in its two weekends, Until Dawn held down the fifth spot. This time it did it with $3.8M. That's a 52.5% drop which is actually good for a horror movie. It cracks this year's top 40 grossing movies with $14.3M.

Sinners might end up being the movie with the best legs this year.

Word of mouth could help Thunderbolts, saw it and thought it was really good :ehh:. Especially with the next couple of weeks being fairly light until Lilo/MI come through and crush the buildings.

Although I could see the new Final Destination movie doing well.
