Identical twin drops bombshell: I committed murder, not my brother

750x422

An Illinois man claimed responsibility for a murder that has kept his identical twin brother behind bars for more than a decade in a shocking confession made on a witness stand Thursday.

Karl Smith, 38, came clean in a courtroom about killing a man in 2003—a crime that police had pinned on his brother, Kevin Dugar, for 13 years, the ChicagoTribune reports.

“I’m here to confess to a crime I committed that he was wrongly accused of,” Smith said as his brother looked on, wiping tears from his eyes.

The two brothers had often impersonated each other since they were young, and they were pretending to be each other in 2003 when Smith said he shot into a group of three people, killing one. “We was acting as one,” Smith testified, according to the Tribune. “Where I was, he was, acting like each other. He pretended to be me, and I pretended to be him.”

The admission prompted immediate doubt from prosecutors, who say Smith is already serving a 99-year prison sentence for a separate crime in 2008 in which a 6-year-old boy was shot in the head during a home invasion and armed robbery, according to the Tribune. Prosecutors say Smith came forward only after an appeals court upheld his conviction in that incident.

“He’s got nothing to lose,” Assistant State’s Attorney Carol Rogala said, according to the newspaper.

Dugar was convicted of first-degree murder in 2005 and was sentenced to 54 years in prison.

This reminds me of that Fredrick Young case

latest

In 1993, Fredrick L. Young was pulled over by police for a busted tail-light on his car, but since he did not have a driver's license, he gave the name of his identical twin brother, Cedric Young, to the officers. Fredrick did this because he knew that his brother, Cedric, had a valid driver's license. When the officers ran a check, they found that Cedric had committed a robbery. Meanwhile, the officers asked if they could search the vehicle, Fredrick agreed, having nothing to hide. The officers found a bag with guns in it and proceeded to arrest him for the robbery. There is evidence to suggest Cedric might have had a part in an armed robbery of a hotel. The long time childhood friend of Cedric and Fredrick who was also involved with the crime, stated during an Unsolved Mysteries video and on trial, that it was Cedric that was with him on the night of the robbery. Fredrick now sits in jail for that crime, even as Cedric's own friends testify that the wrong twin was arrested. Meanwhile, authorities believe they have the right brother in custody. The mother of the twins believes that Cedric was the one who committed the robbery. After the trial, Fredrick's attorney's license was suspended because he did not represent the client as he should have. Fredrick now has a new attorney in hopes of getting the case reopened and solved. Fredrick received a sixty-eight year sentence.

I remember seeing that story on Unsolved Mysteries back in the day.

I know a set of twins named John and Johnny. Back in the day Johnny used to find John's paycheck lying around (living together with their grandma at the time) and he'd go cash it. Foul shyt.

Dude I was in high school with had a brother who murdered someone from a rival neighborhood but he was the one ultimately convicted of the crime. They both ran with the same gang so I guess being fam and being fam at the same time can make them rationalize that, but I can't.

Naw, they both killers. Its just one has 99 years, the other way less. The one with 99 years will die in prison. Sounds like they are both pieces of shyt to me.
