Keep in mind Larry Holmes was a 38-year old fighter who had been inactive for 2 years
Like everyone else here, I chuckle when the phrase "Larry Holmes status" is invoked. The image of the past-his-prime, chubby Holmes of the early 90s sums up what it means to be a (semi) washed-up former great better than anything else I can think of.
But lets also acknowledge the flabby and sick "Larry Holmes" version of Larry Holmes. In his 40s, he gave Holyfield and McCall good fights when the title was on the line, and he beat up Ray Mercer (who was considered one of the top contenders of the time at one point). Not bad.
