Given the escalating racial tension in this country and the possibility of an unfavorable grand jury decision in Ferguson, Missouri, let's engage in a national boycott where all of us (brothers and sisters alike) refuse to purchase any luxury/holiday items on Black Friday and beyond. Let's hit dominant society in the only way that it'll feel it from our community. Plus, we can do more productive things with our limited disposable income.

In refusing to recycle our money back into dominant society, we would be able to keep the money within our own family and community and could work on creating our alternate economy that would generate wealth for us. With our accrued wealth, we could develop power and translate it into influence for our sociopolitical gain in dominant society.

One or two people won't be enough to make a difference. But hundreds and thousands of us will make them recognize a noticeable difference.

Not gonna happen. 'White' people's continued assault against our 'community' has been far too effective.

We are not cohesive enough.

That's the only thing. We've lost all sense of unity and community.

This is more like a rallying call for those who still know better and still have hope.

There is intelligent black society out there. Even on this site.

Was that the problem in Ferguson? We were spending money in the wrong places?

No. But a major problem in Ferguson and in the black community in general is that we rely too much on dominant society and have not become self-sustaining.

But what if that was a black-owned store that Mike Brown walked into? Do you think his death would've resulted?

I don't know what would've happened if Mike Brown walked into a black-owned store and took something.
What do you think would've happened then?

Maybe a scuffle. Or he would've returned the products. But I highly doubt a shooting death would've occurred..

So you don't the owners of the store may have called the police (which was ultimately the problem)?

They could have. But with a more cooperative/competent police force in a more self-sustaining, flourishing predominantly-black neighborhood, the police would've thought twice before using weapons. Or maybe there would've been a black police officer.

But the main point is: we need to stop relying on dominant society to cure our ills.

Your ideas here seem to infer that we need to work harder to take a bigger part of "dominant society"
in order to stop relying on "dominant society"...I'm not sure I follow.

"Our ills" are bigger than what happens with our money...but i'll let you tell it.

1. We need our own alternate economy to develop our own personal and collective wealth. With that accrued wealth, we can attain power to alter how dominant society functions and, by wielding our collective power backed by our wealth, we can influence/force dominant society to heed our interests (if for no other reason, then because money talks). None of this protesting, petitioning, kumbaya talk is going to do anything. Long story short. Money-->power--->influence.

2. Perhaps but don't act like money doesn't play a big role in our ills. If we had money, there'd be: less poverty, less need for government assistance, better choices for school, more black-owned business which would lead to more jobs for us, etc. But let you tell it, black people don't need to worry about money.

1. I'm not against alternative economy...but "alternative" means there should be other choices. If somebody needs a new refrigerator and they've been looking for one to pick up on Black Friday, I think they should get one without worrying about if they would be betraying the "boycott".

2. I didn't say "black people don't need to worry about money", I said "our 'ills' are bigger than money". Those are different.
To keep this short - the main "ill" here is that black boys are getting shot in the street by policemen and left there. I don't see how money is gonna change a person with a mind like Darren Wilson's from doing that.
