The parameters of the original trade:
LAL gets Chris Paul
Houston gets Pau Gasol
NO gets Goran Dragic, Lamar Odom, Luis Scola, Kevin Martin & one of Houston's 2012 1st round draft picks that they acquired from the Knicks
The actual trade:
LAC gets Chris Paul & two 2nd rounders
NO gets Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu and 2 1st rounders
NO's roster a few years later after the trade is Anthony Davis (after NO miraculously got the #1 pick...
) and about $38 million/year for the trio of Eric Gordon, Tyreke Evans and Jrue Holiday (who all do the same thing) through 2016. They also traded their 1st round pick in this upcoming draft to the Sixers for Holiday (top-5 protected).
The criticisms of the original trade were that NO wasn't bottoming out like they needed to and it would have killed their cap space. In reality, they would have had an elite PG and three solid rotation players plus an additional 1st round pick. They would have had cap space by now too (still would have blown it like they did this past offseason) and been in no worse shape than they currently are.
Houston never gets Harden if this trade goes through and the Clips never become a contender. The Lakers aren't the mess they've become and probably have both Paul and Howard. Kobe never gets hurt because he doesn't get run into the ground trying to get them in the playoffs last year too.
In summary, Silver owes the Lakers the #1 pick in this upcoming draft to right Stern's wrong.
