His time in the ABA really sullied his career because he came later. Then the 77 finals hurt even more. Doc was a pioneer along with OJ was one of the 1st black sport faces you seen on commercials. Doc was a pioneer and highly underrated. Hes too 10
That was on Gene Shue. Doc was absolutely unstoppable that entire series. Gene Shue didn’t put the ball in Doc’s hands down the stretch of Game 6….thinking Portland would be looking for that. And of course they would…but it wouldn’t have mattered. They weren’t going to stop him.

As far as the ABA sullying his career, I completely disagree. He was the most popular player in basketball while in the ABA, and was the primary reason the NBA absorbed the ABA. I think recency bias comes to play when dealing with guys like Doc. I saw him play. He was absolutely phenomenal. However, majority of modern fans have only seen clips, if even that.

He’s always been a top 10 player to me….but when you only know or have seen this current era, you’re not likely to put him so high. He certainly deserves more respect.

Great post the issue is his ABA accomplishments in his athletic prime are not included in his overall resume.

Where would we rank doc if this was his resume

3X champion
2X finals MVP
12X all nba/aba
4 time MVP
16X all star

That Maurice Lucas fight at the end of game 2 swung the entire momentum of the series

If dr j is not your first model of influence. Regardless of age.

That is why you struggle.
Plus why you are on a pathway to fail.

Dr j is the beginning gateway influence for the black man and black experience period.

Yeah, Dr.J's more Clyde Drexler than Michael Jordan imo.MJ actually pulled more from Jerry West, Walter Davis, and David Thompson.

I wasn't old enough to see Dr J in his prime but I got to see the most of the back half and he is underrated. He was excellent on both ends of the floor and he remained very productive through the vast majority of his career. He was still a really good dunker even in his mid 30s.
