What was his rift between the NOI all about?

Second: How in the hell did he gain such a following after claiming he was God?

To answer the second question it's manipulation, pure and simple. People like Jim Jones, Charles Manson, and Joesph Smith are very intelligent. Through gradual brainwashing it's possible to make people believe and do anything.
