the ability to control the PACE of a game / dominant stretches of a game
i think this is what truly separates the great from the very goods and its never talked about. its just such an intangible idea that cant be described with stats that it often times gets overlooked
someone made a thread today about what separates derrick rose from russell westbrook, and its a very fair discussion
is rose a better shooter, playmaker, finisher then russ? well yeah, of course he is... but that isnt what puts him in a different echelon
its his ability to lay his blueprint on that ONE single game. its a special trait that can either allow a team to stay close in a game that they would otherwise be blown out in, or push out to a double digit lead in a back and forth type of game.
the character in my study is derrick rose. this is not because im a rose stan, its because im a BULLS fan who has the privilege of watching him play nightly.
he can accurately read how a game is being played out and impose his will in many different ways. you watch bad basketball teams play each other and it always has that same feel.,, no energy, no defensive effort, just guys getting shots up and going through the motions.
that shyt simply doesnt happen when a transcendent player is on the floor.
you have a player like magic, jordan, bird, kobe on your team and you see teams play with a sense of urgency. you see the players around said player fill roles and play to their peaks. you find an identity where a team once lacked character.
you transform franchises. you build something where there was previously nothing.
i cant wait to watch my dude derrick win a title in this city.
