So often when it comes to vices, one of the most common phrases people love to throw out is "in moderation"

Eating junk food? That's okay in moderation.
Ordering takeout? That's okay in moderation.
Consuming alcohol? That's okay in moderation.

Some even argue that using hard drugs is okay....in moderation.

But what does it mean to do something "in moderation"??
Because one of the issues I've always had with this phrase is that it's far too ambiguous and leaves the door open for people to justify any behavior they enjoy but know they shouldn't be doing.

Is moderation once a year? Once a month? Only on weekends? Only on holidays?
At what point does something stop being done in moderation and starts becoming regularity? Because at that point the whole concept loses its meaning.

Above the fray.
Speaking only for myself. The point is that you have a regular lifestyle regimen, and you allow yourself to dabble in things outside of that. Your regimen keeps you sound and healthy. But whether you call it "spice" "variety""cheating" or "vice", it brings you joy, and that keeps you sound and healthy too. Everybody has to find his/her own balance.

Moderation in my opinion for the things listed would be monthly. Americans tend to overindulge and act like it’s normal though.

It's subjective. More often than not, you know when you're doing too much. If you don't, test your discipline abstaining from the issue and you'll really know.

Something that you might indulge in if/when available, that you don’t make a daily habit, and that you’re pretty comfortable turning down if you’re not in the mood for it :manny:
