Phonetically speaking black has a negative connotation with it's pronunciation. The "ck" is an abrupt ending.

Similar to stone and rock. Stone sounds smooth, elegant possibly malleable, as opposed to rock which sounds rough, rugged, jagged.

I could be reaching here but phonetics plays a large role in our language. That's what makes poets so extraordinary. So I could see subconsciously why some folks don't want to be called "black" or associate with "black". So unfortunate.
