I'm pretty sure it was a standard album roll out, he gradually released singles and the album had a set-date months ahead. I think what you're talking about is more attributed to streaming and the ability to do quick/surprise album announcements.

Swizz Beatz had Monster Mondays

Timbaland had Timbaland Thursdays

^^^ all spawned by GOOD Fridays. There were more artists that followed that trend than them as well. This was before streaming and before surprise releases were a thing. Really had nothing to do with either.
