Well I consider someone a fan if they follow an artist's music and like the artist. Its the core fans, the ones who follow religiously who usually buy the albums. With streaming and pirating as big as it is nowadays, the majority of one's album sales are from ride or die fans who would be willing to drop dough for a project. Those numbers might even be inflated since streaming numbers count towards album sales now
