One of the stories floating around is that studio execs wanted to turn the movie "Singles" into a TV show, and when Cameron Crowe said he didn't want to do it, "Friends" is what ended up eventually happening. Could easily see them starting there, and then borrowing some elements of "Living Single", since TV development was pretty iterative back then.

Both Friends and Living Single are produced by Warner Bros. The NBC president admitted that Living Single was a show he really wanted on his network, and should never have passed on. I don't know if Singles inspired it, but Living Single definitely inspired NBC to greenlight and push Friends.
