Mel-Man said Em was at the studio and Dre gave him a bunch of drums kits and taught him the SSL.

But even with all that, the majority of his beats for other artists were still trash. Em's a mad cool dude. And he's from one of the most soulful cities in the country. But all of that never helped his production, lol. You can't teach or buy soul. He just ain't got it.

I agree. Part of that could be based on what he listens to. He's obviously a rap nerd, but the only other genre I know he really liked was rock, particularly 70s rock. That's why his production on The Eminem Show was rock-influenced because he was trying to replicate that sound.

All the great producers and musicians listen to everything and just pick up things from there. I never rated Eminem as a producer like that anyway. He did good work for himself, but his sound only worked for him alone.
