Shular, a guest on Monday’s edition of “Closer Look” said he’d watch his mother prepare meals and share them with people who lived in her community.
“She had the best oxtails in the world,” Shular explained to show host Rose Scott, as he reflected on one of his mother’s recipes that he has yet to master.
During the conversation, Shular, the founder of the Shular Hospitality Group and the founder of the SHULAR Institute, the first Black-owned culinary arts school in the United States, told Scott that “food is life.”
He then further discussed his journey to becoming a master chef, his goal to educate and inspire the next generation of chefs, and the overall mission and vision of the new Tucker-based SHULAR Institute.
“The SHULAR Institute gives students what they need for today and beyond, said Shular. “We are not training people just to go out and be a line cook.”
