@MuseZack
I just learned that the Falkland Islands had a native wolf species that was so gentle and friendly that they'd literally swim out to greet boats coming ashore. They were quickly driven to extinction by settlers and now I'm mad at a 150 year old environmental crime.

@MuseZack
There's debate on whether the Falkland wolf walked to the islands during a glacial period or were brought by natives as semi-domesticated canids and went feral like the dingo in Australia. They weighed about 45 lbs. and apparently ate mostly birds and rodents.

@MuseZack
I wouldn't presume to give @colossal advice, but "cute lil' friendly guy who lived on a barely inhabited island and only became extinct in 1876" seems like a more promising candidate for de-extinction than animals that haven't walked the Earth since the Pleistocene.

@MuseZack
Note: I have no opinion on the Falklands/Malvinas dispute beyond thinking that whichever side promises to de-extinct these good boys and girls and let them roam over their home territories again should control those islands. @JMilei, I hear you like to clone canines...

@MuseZack
There's plenty of blame to go around for Dusicyon australis's extinction, from Argentine gauchos to British sheep farmers, but I regret to say the biggest villain was this American John Jacob Astor. His fur hunters devastated the population & took the pelts back to New York City.

@MuseZack
LOL, the last time I had this many Argentinians yelling at me was over X-Men: First Class putting Villa Gesell in the mountains. (For the record, that was production! In our drafts it was called out as a seaside town.)

@MuseZack
It's actually kind of refreshing to get yelled at by Argentine Internet leftists because unlike American or European Internet leftists they're actually patriotic toward their own country. I respect that.

@benryanwriter
As so went with most mega fauna after humans arrived.

@MuseZack
There are a zillion "This is what white people do!" replies and it's like, let me introduce you to the moa, the Madagascar elephant bird, or every Australian animal over 100 kg. like the Diprotodon...

@cryptojacktack
Penguins were named after a totally different bird that lived near the british and went extinct

@QueenNaomiNYC
Early settlers committed so many devastating crimes against nature. Its disgusting how quick they were to kill any animal/human they encountered instead of understanding their world. :/

@j_vitullo
They're called Islas Malvinas, not falkl*nd islands, forro

@aegijaem_
[Quoted tweet]
Islas Malvinas* and it was the british who killed them, the original argentine population left them alone. They also werenāt wolves, they were called guarĆ”, and were more closely related to the aguarĆ” guazĆŗ than wolves.

@emkun
If you want a bit of revenge against those settlers, start calling them "Malvinas" islands. That's the name the country that the islands are a part of the territory gave them.

@Battt1812
"it had no fear of humans; it was possible to lure the animal with a chunk of meat held in one hand, and kill it with a knife or stick held in the other" i kind of hate humans
