I think this is the one system that every body and they momma has a good memory about.
When the ps2 released, it was a monster. Sony had us thinking we would be playing games with toy story 2 gfx in the early 2000s
Im not much for nostalgia or going back into the past, but I would give ANYTHING for gaming to feel like this era again.
It was the perfect storm of experimentation and commercialism. Some of my most fond gaming memories are from ps2 era.
-DBZ finally getting an AMERICAN release that was good (
final bout)
-Grand theft auto, oh god, one of the first times a game actually changed what I thought a game could be. I still remember where I was when I first saw some one play gta 3.
-Dvd play back
it changed the game and gave you a perfect excuse for parents to buy a game console.
- Platformers last hurrah. man its seems like we haven't seen a good wealth of platformers since this generation. Jak n Daxter, Ratchet n Clank, Prince of Persia (before the "edgy" redo) and Sly cooper
- Devil May Cry. To put it simply, I had a dreamcast at first, I saw this commercial, and INSTANTLY KNEW I fukkED UP. I proceeded to unhook my dreamcast and trade it in for a used ps2 months later. I had never experienced something so stylish, so smooth and so damn fun at the time. A lot of 3rd person, char action games had gotten somewhat clunky with the transition to 3d. PS2 changed all of that and what DMC/ Ninja Gaiden started, GOW perfected
- Before Rock steady blessed us with the Arkham Series, Activistion managed to give us Spider-Man 2. I remember seeing previews for the game and it being one of the first games I actively followed up until release (along with DBZ budokai and GTA: SA) I literally FEENED for this game
It was every thing I had dreamed of, being a spidey fan, and it fukking delivered
Speaking of San Andreas
- GTA: SA is one of the greatest games every made. Probably one of the first games I sinked legit hours into (beyond the normal 8-12 hours ). I dunno how, but I convinced my mom and aunt to get it for me, like no questions asked
I still remember getting the game, and brining the book to school the next day (just to prove to Africans I was about that life
) First game I ever "took a break" from too (damn RC plane mission)
-Need for speed underground 2 was another big time dump for me. Spent hours building up cars, drifting and acting like I was in the fast and furious. Snoop dogg song "riders in the storm" was piff too.
I couldn't afford a lot, and my gaming taste weren't as refined back then, so I didn't get to experience a lot of game releases. But the ones I did are for ever ingrained in my memory.
