Biden orders federal government closed Jan. 9 for national day of mourning for Jimmy Carter

WASHINGTON — With the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, President Biden has signed an executive order to close the government the day of his funeral.
The order says all executive departments and agencies will be closed on Jan. 9 in observation of Carter's funeral. It is customary that when a United States president dies, the day of their funeral is observed as a federal holiday.
Some federal offices may remain open "for reasons of national security, defense, or other public needs." The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will also be closed on Jan. 9.
Carter passed away Sunday afternoon in his home in Georgia at the age of 100. Carter's funeral will be held at the Washington National Cathedral at 10 a.m.
Carter entered hospice in February 2023 after battling and beating cancer back in 2015.
President Biden ordered flags be flown at half-staff for 30 days from Sunday.
