There was hella clubs like that back in the day. But those clubs were hella wack because it was like a high school dance.
It was too dark in there, everyone was drunk and you would still see crazy shyt like fools getting stomped out and drunk chicks getting taken advantage of. 
And even those hood clubs that catered to regular folks still had that air or pretentiousness. I remember this club called Platinum in DC. It was the definition if a working class club. A few times I went back in the day, rappers would show up and perform live unannounced. Jim Jones and Ray Cash came and performed unannounced two times I went. But it was still a vibe of flexing and literally throwing money around although probably not as bad as today.If anything, hood folks who don't know how to act played a big role in the decline of the big club culture in DC. Park got a bad reputation after that football player got stabbed outside of there. Love became too hood after a while as well. Not everything is necessarily bad about an upscale vibe.
Where I'm from in the Bay there's a saying that beef is a broke nikka sport and its fukking true. No one who's happy with their life and got their shyt together go to the club wanting to beat a nikka ass or shoot the place up. I'm glad I got all of that wild shyt outta my system because one bad night at the bar/club could have you dead or locked up for a long time.
