loony/heel bogart was his best work.

I'm not talking about his earlier roles with minimum substance..I'm specifically talking caine mutiny, the two mrs carrolls and the desperate hours.

Not too many stars from that era even played heels after becoming stars.

Gable played heels at first, then I don't recall him playing one after.
Cooper never played one
Grant, no.
Jimmy, no.
(To my knowledge..pls by all means drop some movies I may have missed)

Fonda did once way after the fact.

Eddie g. The only one that comes to mind that seamlessly did face and heel roles continually

I don't think anyone played a more likeable villain than Cagney, he was charming yet anger personified. Bogart as epic as he was, always played the laid back/sinister role of badguy/anti-hero. Cagney added dimension, and he could take a punch. Watching James was like watching Rourke in the first Sin City, just a force to be reckoned with, from every angle.

Cagney one of the goats to me personally. Talent and diversity its laughton, cagney, lemmon, eddie g., william powell(I really wish powell did at least one heel role though.)
