I'm unsure that Boko Haram is "hiding behind Islam". We should remember that Boko Haram started out as a small sect which opposed secular education from the very beginning. They become a mass militant movement when their leader was killed extrajudicially by the Nigerian security forces. Also, it's important to state that Boko Haram has been quite limited to the Kanuri-speaking North East of the country and doesn't represent the entirety of the North.

You're right about them religious part starting off small, but they've been recruiting using "you're suffering because the Nigeria government is a puppet of the West" propaganda for years now, and that correlates with their recent boom in numbers. I doesn't help that President Goodluck is a Southerner and they (and a lot of Northerner overall) think that he's a secret Manchurian candidate put in place by the Igbos to take over the country.

And they were violent and militant before the killing, threatening political leaders and politicians in Nigeria, that's what led to the initial military intervention.

Fair point. I would suggest that only the most radical of Northern Nigeria's politicians, religious and traditional leaders of been repeating such a line of Northern exclusion. Much of the Northern leadership feels right at home with the PDP and other members of Jonathan's party. Additionally about this Northern neglect, they should blame their own leaders who ran Nigeria during the era of dictatorships.
