He's very likely heard a dope gay rapper...being gay doesn't automatically mean your sexuality has to be the central topic in your music. If Frank Ocean had been a rapper nobody would have confused him with the nikka that sang "boy p*ssy". While he's gay/bi, his music didn't revolve around it or use it as a gimmick (directly at least).
Now you take somebody like Cakes Da Killa, he can actually rap pretty decent, but his subject matter and image make his sexuality central to his art. I have nothing against gays but I'm not really his demographic at that point.
IMO, there can be a successful openly gay male rapper as long as he's not really making gay music. Even if you touch on the sexuality part of it, the minute you go into detail about sucking dikk or something else is the minute you are making music strictly for gay people. I don't even really like to hear the vivid details of straight rappers sexcapades unless it's funny.
