This nikka dont know what the fukk he talking about. Punchlines aint no fukking lyricism (at least by itself). Lyricism is having a context beneath what youre saying. nikkas like Fab, Cass, Luda, etc just punch just to be punching. Thats not lyricism.

Lupe is right, flow/punchlines should dressing on the story you are trying to tell.
Rap is about telling a story in an artistic manner, thats its fundamental purpose.

I get what he’s saying and Lupe has the right to say what he wants as he’s one of the premier lyricists alive.
You not need no damn punchlines to tell a story. Lupe is wrong. What you need is diction and some sort of brevity. Not no fukking Gerber bite ass punchlines.

This is dry hating on Kendrick and his moment in the sun with these replies, who is probably the number 1 story teller atm in the game. How is storytelling not the apex of lyrics when we got rappers like Nas, Pac, Face, Cube all in our top 10s and none of those dudes really do too much metaphors/simile/entendres. All rappers that Lupe is a student of.

Whats funny is people would say Pac isnt a lyricist but the dictionary definition for lyricism is being able to express emotion in an imaginative way; which was Pacs forte. Not too many people do that better than Pac. shyt dont say nothing about no fukking punchlines. Like you said, Lupe just slick hating on Kendrick.

I have favorites who I think are some of the greatest ever…amazing bodies of work, amazing with the flows/rhyming, great conviction, etc… But if you can’t play with words…and there are a lot of other creative, subtle ways to play with words besides the few Lupe mentioned…then I personally don’t carry you as an alien-level lyricist like that either,
