I had that issue. I remember shortly after this issue, the Source gave Double Up a 2 mic rating.

yeah, i remember that too. to this day, that album is still a favorite of mine. naw, it ain't harlem world but it's a damn good album

so many favorite tracks on that album... same nikkas, another story to tell, stay out my way, make me cry, from stratch, get ready, fukk me, fukk you, blood is thick, you ain't smart, all i ever wanted etc. really the whole damn album :yeshrug:

what i respect about that album is parts of it was where ma$e was really at, at that time in his life. so it's like hearin' the music that's was shapin' those very moments. i can remember when he retired and when it made the news on the radio. i couldn't believe it because at that point he was my favorite rapper in the game. he could do the street records, the club joints, and then even the more accessible r&b records like with brandy and brian mcknight. he made it look all too easy, like it was nothin' :wow:

Double up is just a really awful album from beginning to end. It seems Ma$e was caught up in the tension of trying to return to his murder days to keep up with the competition (DMX and Jay had completely changed NY hip hop from the time Harlem world dropped and shiny suits was played), and trying to also satisfy diddy's influence and live up to his "take hits from the eightaaaas, and make it sound so craaazaaay" bad boy formula. The end result is a conceptual mess, with Ma$e sounding completely lifeless and confused. Career killing album.

Only song he sounds remotely comfortable in is "All I ever wanted".

he did this interview and then that interview in the source where he looked like an animal on the cover and he was talking about "returning to murda mase" and getting back to his real persona instead of the one puffy made for him to sell units. of course he ended up retiring i believe right around the time that issue of the source dropped which rendered all of that getting back to his gritty roots meaningless. from summer 98 to summer 99 was a bad year for harlem with L dying, Cam flopping and Mase retiring. L dying hurt my soul and Cam and Mase beefing over money then both of them dropping mediocre ass albums was disappointing.

and as far as double goes, from scratch was the only song on there with any replay value but it honestly was just a lesser rip-off of "24 hours to live" with lesser mc's. it might as well have been called "24 hours to live part 2".

edit - here's that cover.

what are some key highlights breh? I used to be a huge mase fan and would have been interested to read it all in the past, but now while I can appreciate his music I can't muster up the interest to read in detail anything some formerly known as "murda turned pastor yet still picking up trannies" ass nikka gotta say.
