Is this strictly a southern US thing or is it done everywhere?

Did yall parents make y'all call them "sir" or "ma'am" (or some appropriate equivalent if you arent from the US) when you were growing up?

If you are grown, do you still do it - address your parents as such? If you have your own kids now, do you make them address you as such?

Also, for men and women you aren't related to (strangers, folks in passing) do you use these words these words to address them as well, especially those considered your elders?
